The wall rose overhead and blocked all evidence of everything that was once known to lurk on the other side of its great grey blocks. It was a stone barrier that conveniently removed sight of all that would matter, all that had ever mattered, and soon all those things would cease to exist… if they hadn’t ceased already.
It was The Stone Wall. Crafted by Grand Engineer Hubert, brother to our Queen. Did she care –did she even know? She had been sick for the past half decade and chances were that she still had no idea about this giant monstrosity that kept us bound to a dying city, nor why it had been constructed in the first place.
Apart from the elite who guard the top of this blighted creation, I feel as though I’m the last who remembers. No-one dares speak or even dares acknowledge it, instead they pretend as though it had always been there. That life had always been this way.
Slender trees once dotted lush golden fields and whipped back and forth at the whim of the warm winds, until they were then transformed into rough, dusty deserts that could harbour no life; rough, dusty deserts that then slowly morphed in a bleak blackness that fell into a stark nothingness.
The Stone Wall had been constructed to hide the grisly sight, the great blackness that not even the sun’s rays could pierce, and no-one had since witnessed what had become of the outside world. Perhaps no-one could. Perhaps one simple glare would result in a leap of eternity with no end but that of the void.
