“If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
Joey’s muffled voice only just touched my ears through the layer of… whatever the heck my face had landed in.
With a great push, I heaved myself out of the stinky, slimy whatever-it-was and coughed.
“That doesn’t even make sense, Joey,” I gasped. “Stop joking. Help me.”
Joey giggled. Behind the gunk that coated my eyes, I could only just see his silhouette behind the moonlight. It wasn’t much but it was enough I could see where to lurch.
“Woah now, Frankenstein.”
I could see the typical Joey smirk-grin embedded in his voice. Was this how bats did it? With my senses diminished, was I now a super human?
Joey giggled again. I could kill him. Perhaps I would. We were deep in Mt. Esrann’s arse crack. No-one would find his body. And if they did, they’d probably be fully aware that he’d had it coming. Everyone knew Joey, or at least someone like a Joey.
I lurched forward again, hands outstretched to wrap around his neck, when a root twisted and curled around my ankle and sent me flying forward into yet another stinky goopy mountain.
“What the fuck!” I cried. “What the hell did I land in this time?”
He didn’t giggle. That was utterly unlike Joey.
Squelch, squelch, squelch.
