Stale Pepperoni Pizza (a five-minute #freewrite)

The stale pepperoni pizza glares up at me and I glare right back before stabbing it with a dirty fork. Pizza and a fork? ‘Unthinkable,’ I hear you think as loud as though you were speaking, but I can’t get my fingers dirty; the water situation in this apartment is… lacking, for lack of better word.

This was life these days. When we were children we proclaimed that we couldn’t wait to become adults, to rule the world, and now I am one. And I most certainly am not ruling anything, unless you count this days old pizza. I am Adult, Lord of the Stale Pizza, and I don’t want this anymore. I want to turn back the clock and become a naive little moron again.

‘Rule the world,’ I snort, ‘indeed.’

Nibbling around the edge of the stale crust, I close my eyes and imagine for a moment, just a moment, that this was a freshly cooked, freshly delivered bite of pizza and not just a handout from the guy next door. My tongue touches a sliver of pepperoni and my tastebuds sizzle with delight. A taste I will savour for as long as I can. Stale or not. Old or not. At least it isn’t mouldy, not yet, but would it get mouldy? There are probably too many preservatives jammed into the thing.

It can be just like that McDonald’s burger that was placed on eBay a few years back. That thing was twenty years old and still looked as good as the day it was bought, and somebody probably paid a motza for it. Maybe I can do that with these last two slices of pizza!

My stomach lurches then doubles over itself in protest. It couldn’t wait twenty years.

I keep eating.

Hullo, it’s day 627 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite! The prompt for today is — stale pepperoni pizza — and this is what I came up with before the eggtimer website beep-a-beeped at me.

I’m still trying to get into the groove again with my writing. Struggling. Will get there!
If anyone’s reading this who read my last ULOG, just a quick note to say that the Council acted promptly, my son’s arm is mostly healed, and so is my buttocks. Confused? Please find said ULOG – here. ?
