Take a Chance pt.5 (a five-minute #freewrite)

Paralysed, I stared down into the gaping canyon, my eyes widening further with every extended second it took to take in what awaited me. Thousands of trees grew upwards as spiny spears reaching for me, taunting me, mocking me, telling me that when I inevitably fell into their depths they’d spike me with their sharp, evil treetops.

Joey clapped a hand against my shoulder and I stumbled headfirst, heart racing, only saved by the railing pressed up against my belly.

“Fuck. I hate you,” I gasped.

“You love it,” he smiled. “You ready?”

“Ready?” I blinked. “For what? You haven’t even told me what we’re doing here besides some notion of trying to tell me what ‘fun’ is! I’m not finding this very fun yet.”

“It’s a surprise! Are you ready?”

“I’ll never be ready.”

“Even better!”

He pushed me down the path, following the railing, until we got to a zip-line stretched from our side of Esrann Canyon to the other, almost invisible by the distance. The other side of the canyon was a good five kilometres away.

“No friggen way, you can’t make me go on that!”

Joey raised an eyebrow and smirked, “I’m not!” then thrust a flying fox’s frantic feet into my hands, the poor creature flapping its wings like there was no tomorrow as it tried to escape me.

Then it lifted into the air, taking me with it.

Hullo! Today is Day 612 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite! The prompt for today is actually — benevolent dragon — but I missed yesterday’s prompt — paralysed — and decided to go with that one instead. πŸ™‚

This is Part 5 of a Joey and Jenny adventure! You can find the other Parts here:
Part One – prompt nap
Part Two – prompt hippo
Part Three – prompt posted
Part Four – prompt canyon

Re: the whole flying fox thing. In Australian playgrounds, the “zip-line” equipment is called a “flying fox.” Jenny isn’t going to use a flying fox though, she’s going to use an actual flying fox! πŸ˜€ Uh oh.
