Prompt: Shaken, Not Stirred (a five-minute #freewrite)

Hullo, Hullo!

It’s day 522 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite, and I’m still integrating the daily prompt with my life’s masterpiece! Today’s vignette is another of Alysse, which I’m so happy about. She needs more page-time and these last couple of prompts have given me some ideas as to what to do with her.

Today’s Prompt: Shaken not stirred
Today’s Character: Alysse and Xelcia

“It must be shaken,” High Magister Xelcia snapped. “Whatever are you thinking, child? Stirring will not mix the potion, only render it useless. Discard it immediately.”

Alysse bowed her head.

“I’m sorry, milady,” her voice shook. “It won’t happen again.”

“See that it does not. Resources are slim until we can walk the mainland freely once more.”

Xelcia studied the girl and watched with a careful eye as she laid a hand over the vial and willed the liquid to vanish. Her hand trembled. Peculiar.

“Alysse,” Xelcia glided towards the girl and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “You’re shaking. What’s wrong?”

The child’s doe-shaped eyes glimmered bright with tears before she whipped her head away.

“Just a dream.”

Xelcia paled.

“Just a dream?” she shook her head. “No, dear child. You know your dreams are not as they seem. What happened?”

Alysse bit her lip.

“There was a demon. It was in pain. A-and… the red hair… it came. It took the demon away. I miss him.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.
