Jessica took a deep breath, held it for twenty seconds, and then exhaled it in a long draw. Control. She needed to maintain control. It may be impossible to control others, but the least she could do was control herself and how she reacted to stress.
Another deep breath in. And out again. Whoosh. Her heart slowed and an upliftedness swarmed through her, allowing a serenity to take over that which was once close to blind rage.
There we go, she thought to herself, much better.
Smiling, she turned away from the knife and headed for the living room. One sock on, then the other; one sneaker on, then the other.
The phone was on the coffee table. It could stay there. So could her keys. She was leaving and she would not be back. How many missing persons cases were those who just walked out the door and left their lives behind? She giggled. How long til someone would notice she was even ‘missing?’ It didn’t matter. They wouldn’t find her. She giggled again.
Closing the door at her back, she turned the handle. It was locked. Locked out of her home, out of her life, she suddenly felt free. With one step in front of the other, she walked. She didn’t know where she was going but anywhere was better than here.
Hullo! It’s Day 514 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite, the prompt for today is — control — and this is what I came up with before the eggtimer website went beep-a-beep at me.

Today’s writing may be something I’ve toyed with doing before. Minus the whole knife thing. I’m not a lunatic. Well, maybe my sub-conscience is; who’s to say? I did just write a knife into the freewrite after all! Also reminds me of an old Garfield comic.
One of the recurring storylines involve Garfield getting lost or running away. The longest one of these was in 1986 where it lasted for over a month; it began with Jon telling Garfield to go get the newspaper. Upon walking outside to retrieve it, He wonders what will happen if he wanders off – and decides to find out.
