Aunt Elma’s Kitchen (a five-minute #freewrite)

Gemma pushed the bowl away and folded her arms, ignoring the crimson droplets that flew outward and stained the pale faux-wood of the cheap MDF table.

“I don’t want to eat it! What the heck is it, anyway?”

“Mind your manners, young lady,” Aunt Elma replied, her voice as calm and serene as the springtime meadows. “Borscht. It’s cabbage borscht. And you’ll eat it all up like a good girl.”

“No I won’t.”

“It’ll put hair on your chest.”

“I don’t want hair on my chest!”

Aunt Elma raised an eyebrow and tutted, then calmly returned the bowl, ignoring the stubborn lower lip that stuck out as far as the fabled Pinocchio’s fibber-nose.

“My dearest Gem-Gem, in this day and age we all need a good strand or two on our chests. You will not leave this table until the entire bowl is drained.”

“Fine. I’ll stay here forever!”

The protruding lower lip grew impossibly longer.

Minutes passed. Hours. Gemma’s eyes drooped and soon the bowl of borscht transformed into a crimson liquid pillow. Aunt Elma sighed and prepared the cleaver. The girl would soon learn to do as she was told and respect the rules of the kitchen or the next meal wouldn’t be borscht, it would be Gem-Gem Jambalaya.

Hello everyone! 🙂 It’s Day 490 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite, the prompt for today is — cabbage borscht — and this little bit of writing is what I came up with before the eggtimer website went beep-a-beep at me.

March is fast approaching! This late in the month I don’t think the Madness will be an official event, but I’m still doing it and will still be throwing SBI shares to those who follow along with my story. Will be writing my March Madness Introduction and Intentions soon 🙂
